Since RJ blends in so well with others from a physical perspective, it is difficult for teachers or peers to recognize & understand his social & communcation impairments, therefore many peeps misread his body language and responces. AND PLEASE DON’T “make” him make eye contact with you because quite simply, it does not mean to him what it does to you. What it means to him is sort’a what looking at a white wall means to you.

Last night was the first time EVER that RJ initiated a get together with someone other than me (his mom). We, (the family & extended family) were all sitting at the table talking about movies, etc. and one of the guys mentioned Star Wars, then he said to his uncle “Maybe you and me could go see that movie sometime when it goes to the dollar movies?” WOW that was a huge BREAK THROUGH & I’m so proud of him. See!!! developmentally delayed means delayed, not never. I am so thankful to see him growing up in ways that I had dreamed of for so long.

I think if we (Aspies) know why we are more unique than other people then we will better know how to advocate for our selves and also know what obstacles to be aware of. For instance, I know a guy who knows that he sometimes says inappropriate comments but only after it’s to late, so he let’s people know up front that he has asperger’s & that he wants hem to tell him if he offends them so he’ll know not to do it again.
Some people just naturally have good communication & socail skills & other people need some training or to be taught the basics of etiquette. Anyway, you know what they say? If we’re not learning then we’re not changing, and if we’re not changing, then were not growing…

Aspies have awesome strengths & qualities & some have the most interesting stories to share. I know this one guy who did’nt even know he was an aspie until his freshman year in college & he went all the way through school w/out alot of necessary support & accommodations. Now that he knows, he knows where his strengths & weaknesses are and is able to get some of the supports he needs to be successful in college. WTG u aspies!!!!

We are a community of friends, families, parents, professionals, & aspies of all ages excited about the opportunities of this discussion forum and the friendships that are being developed.
I know that many aspies who “growup” often go on to lead very satisfying & rewarding lives and may become parents, or teachers, engineers, actors, business owners, and more. When they have the opportunity to receive life skills training, mentoring, speech, PT, ST, OT, social skills, or maybe etiquette courses are able to reach these and other goals more successfully. What I dont know is why it is so difficult for aspies and person’s on the spectrum to make & keep eye contact during discussions.
